How do you describe racism to your children or grandchildren?
Well, the first thing that I would tell my daughter about racism is that it happens because of other peoples' ignorance. We are all ignorant about something. For example, many of us hate math before we've really tried to figure it out, because everyone is always saying how difficult it is and what a waste of time it can be. Many of us don't find a point at which we really enjoy math. We just don't give it a chance. Similarly, many people just do not give people of other "races" or cultures a chance because their minds are already made up in advance. Likely because their family members, friends, or somebody said or did something to make them feel uncomfortable about that "race" or they saw something they didn't like and didn't give it a second chance. Either way, it is not a smart thing to do because a racist person walks around every day seeing the world through foggy gles. They don't see what's really there, they see the world as they believe it to be and not for what it is. It is sad, because they are the ones missing out on life. To be a part of another culture and enjoy the company of someone from another "race" is truly a blessing. You could learn so much just by listening to those who you think are so much different from you. It is a smart woman or man who learns to understand someone else's perspective. PLUG: finally we have a fresh perspective in the White House! GO OBAMA!!!
