I have a rat in my house. How do we get it?

We have been putting out traps and the thing gets the food and triggers the trap but never gets caught. We even put out gin traps last night and this moring the traps had triggered, food was gone and so was the rat. Any ideas on what we can do. we dont wanna use poison cos its in the back of the chimney and if it dies in there it will stink the place out and we would have no way of getting it
